When a hiring manager reviews a developer's resume, they usually have a good idea of what they want to find. While the specifics may vary from one job to the next, most hiring managers have very similar things in mind when they need to find a strong developer.

A Clear Career Path 

Hiring managers look at more than just your experience when reviewing your resume; they also take your career trajectory into account. Typically, their goal is to determine if your path is logical and if the role they are trying to fill could sensibly come next. 

To make sure your career path is clear, make sure to list your past relevant experience in reverse chronological order. This order allows the hiring manager to see how you’ve progressed over time. 

If you are making a career shift, then you’ll need to take a couple of extra steps. For example, you can outline your new direction in your professional summary, highlighting your transferable skills. You can also discuss your career realignment in a cover letter. That way, you can give the hiring manager insight into why you are making a change and emphasize why are you an excellent candidate.

In most cases, hiring managers only spend a few seconds initially skimming a resume. During that first review, they are trying to determine if you have the skills and capabilities they need to find. If your resume contains a ton of information that isn’t highly relevant to the role, the hiring manager might assume that you aren’t a candidate worth pursuing.

Use the keywords listed in the vacancy announcement as a guide, then include achievements that align with those priorities. Additionally, eliminate any details that don’t provide the hiring manager with value. That way, your entire resume is as relevant as possible, increasing the odds that you’ll catch the hiring manager’s eye. 

 

An Error-Free Resume 

Spelling and grammar mistakes can quickly land your resume in the discard pile. If a hiring manager sees an error, even a small one, they may assume that you lack attention to detail or aren’t particularly passionate about the opportunity. 

Before you submit your resume, take a few minutes to review it carefully. Use spelling and grammar checking tools as a first step to identifying mistakes. If possible, have a trusted friend or colleague review your resume for errors as well. 

If that isn’t an option, consider placing your resume in a text-to-speech program. Often, it’s easier to hear a problem than to see it when it comes to your own documents, so this can be a workable alternative to a review by someone else.
