Then, as you prepare your answers, try to work in details from your research. Combine an overview of a related past accomplishment (quantifying what you can) and how it relates to a problem the company needs to solve or a goal it has. That way, you can showcase the value you provide and not just your capabilities.
Discuss How You Approach Problems
It’s common for hiring managers to ask you to describe a time you faced a challenge and how you overcame it. While you want to include an overview of the skills involved, also incorporate details about how you examine and explore obstacles when you encounter them.
The hiring manager isn’t just assessing your hard skills; they also want to learn about how you think. By explaining why you approached a problem a particular way, you are giving them additional insights.
Plus, this approach gives you a chance to showcase valuable soft skills, like critical thinking, problem-solving, and creativity. Since these are all important in data science, highlighting them in this manner can be beneficial.
An experienced hiring manager can tell when a candidate is providing answers they think the hiring manager wants to hear. If that happens, you’ll come off as disingenuous, and that will hurt your chances of advancing in the hiring process.
Why does authenticity matter? Because the hiring manager needs to assess cultural fit as well as technical ability. If you aren’t coming off as genuine, the hiring manager may question whether you’re the right candidate for the job. They can’t be sure that you are the person you seemingly are trying to be.
