How to Stay Motivated at Work During this Holiday Season

The holiday season can be hectic. Between shopping, parties, visiting friends and family, and traveling, many professionals are dealing with significantly more personal obligations than usual. Then, if you toss their workload into the mix, it’s easy to see how staying focused can be a challenge.

Keeping yourself motivated at work isn’t always easy during the holidays. Luckily, there are things you can do to make sure that you remain at your best. Here’s how to get started.

Take Time Off

While it may seem counterintuitive to use your vacation days as a means of staying motivated and productive at work, it’s actually a good idea. You are giving yourself the time that you can use to handle your personal obligations or simply relax. That way, when you are working, you can remain focused.

Avoid Multitasking

For the vast majority of people, multitasking is a myth. In many cases, a person isn’t handling several tasks simultaneously. Instead, they are shifting quickly between the activities, jerking their focus on from to the next. Usually, the result is less than ideal, as you aren’t effectively concentrating, and the quality of your work can suffer.

If you want to remain productive at work, avoid multitasking at all costs. Focusing on one task at a time is typically more efficient, so resist the urge to do two things at once.

Leave Your Work at Work

During the holiday season, taking your work home means sacrificing personal time you could be spending handling your obligations or celebrating. If it happens even semi-regularly, you might begin to resent your job, destroying your motivation.

Whenever possible, leave your work at work. Don’t let it creep into your personal time, ensuring you have a chance to enjoy the season. That way, you won’t be resentful of your job, leaving your motivation intact.

Embrace Planning

Since your schedule might get a bit hectic during the holidays, planning is your friend. By taking control of your calendar and scheduling your time based on your priorities, you can make sure that critical tasks are handled in a timely manner.

Use your work calendar to block out time for every activity you need to handle, including your individual responsibilities. By effectively turning everything into an appointment, you decrease the odds that a coworker will think you are available and scheduling something at that time or interrupting you when you want to remain focused. Plus, seeing that its time to handle a particular task might motivate you to get going. You also won’t be worried that you’re forgetting a vital assignment, as everything you need to do has its own appointment.

Additionally, use a calendar to keep track of your personal time as well. Add appointments for any dinners or parties, picking family up from the airport, designating shopping days, or anything else you need to handle. While your schedule doesn’t necessarily have to be rigid, this approach does decrease the odds that you’ll forget something important, and that can keep your stress levels lower throughout the day.
