Are You CIO Material?

Are You CIO Material

Everyone has different career goals. While many people simply want to be experts in their fields, others have their eyes directed toward the sky, envisioning themselves as a CIO.

While there is nothing wrong with thinking big, particularly when it comes to your career, it also isn’t uncommon to wonder if you are actually CIO material. After all, C-suite positions aren’t like any other, and being an expert in your arena isn’t necessarily enough if you want to reach this leadership tier.

Some people may thrive as a CIO while others may falter. If you want to determine whether you are genuinely cut out for a C-suite position, here are some points to consider.

Are You Comfortable Working with Upper Management?

If you end up in the CIO role, you are going to spend a lot of time working with upper management. It’s a core part of the job, so you need to be comfortable interacting with other C-suite members as well as various department heads and similar managers in the organization.

Do You Understand the Core Financial Management Principles?

All executives have certain financially-oriented responsibilities. At a minimum, you will likely have to oversee a budget, track expenses, and keep everything balances and properly allocated.

If you struggle with financial matters, either personally or professionally, then the C-suite might not be right for you. However, if you have a sound grasp of the core principles, you can likely navigate these waters.

Do You Enjoy Strategic Planning?

Another core duty for CIOs is strategic planning. They have to consider the company’s broader vision, mission, and goals and then use those details to guide the departments they oversee, ensuring that the organization is working harmoniously and with the same objectives in mind.

Anyone who dislikes strategic planning likely won’t be very happy as a CIO. However, those that thrive in these activities may find a CIO position especially rewarding.

How Do You Feel About Change?

As a CIO, you wouldn’t just have to deal with change; you would have to be a leader and advocate for it in some situations. If change makes you inherently uncomfortable at all times, working as a CIO might not be a smart move. However, if you are fine with well-planned change or even a bit of chaos, a CIO role could be invigorating instead of frightening.

Do You Struggle to Make a Decision?

CIOs have to make decisions; it’s the nature of the job. While you can certainly gather information and analyze your choices, you also need to be clear and definitive when the time comes to choose a path.

Both rash decisions and long, drawn-out processes aren’t ideal in a CIOs world. If you don’t think you can make a quick choice when the situation demands it or aren’t capable of being methodical about your decision when needed, then being a CIO might not be up your alley.
